The Leader and Founder of the Union Government (UG), Akwasi Addai Odike, has launched a scathing attack on President John Dramani Mahama, condemning what he describes as an ineffectual government response to the abolition of LI2462 in the renewed fight against illegal mining, colloquially known as galamsey.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Monday, August 18, 2025, hosted by Ohemaa Sakyiwaa, Mr. Odike stated that the recent cabinet meeting on this pressing issue would yield little to no results, labelling it as “baseless and worthless.”

The Businessman expressed that the discussions lacked substantial evidence and practical value.

Mr. Odike asserted that President Mahama has no genuine interest in combatting galamsey, stressing that he is merely a shadow of former President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, who also failed to address the crisis.

According to him, Mr. Mahama has come to exploit Ghana’s mineral resources for his own parochial interests.

“Let me say this emphatically: galamsey will send the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into opposition.

“The rate at which illegal mining is destroying our water bodies is becoming rampant. This situation is getting out of hand,” he condemned.

Furthermore, Mr. Odike urged the government to declare a state of emergency on the nation’s forest reserves if they are genuinely serious about tackling this issue.

He cautioned that all mining activities in the country must be suspended for proper consultations to curb the menace.

He affirmed that President Mahama must spare no one involved in galamsey, including his own government officials.

Mr. Odike lamented that Ghanaians once placed their trust in President Mahama before he assumed power, stating that they feel betrayed as events continue to take a disappointing turn.

He explained that Ghanaians had hoped Mahama would be the saviour to end illegal mining, only to find that his administration has performed worse than the previous government.
