Having examined the four‑year data (2022‑2025) on the performance of candidates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) core subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, I am alarmed by the sharp fluctuations in achievement levels.
The statistics exposes a pattern that cannot be overlooked if the nation is to sustain educational advancement.
English Language showed a notable improvement, rising from 60.39 percent in 2022 to 73.11 percent in 2023.
However, the progress didn’t last; the figure fell to 69.52 percent in 2024 and later lingered at 69.00 percent in 2025.
Core Mathematics began at 61.39 percent in 2022, edged higher to 62.23 percent in 2023 and peaked at 66.86 percent in 2024, only to drop sharply to 48.73 percent in 2025.
Integrated Science climbed to 66.82 percent in 2023 from 62.45 percent in 2022, yet it fell to 58.77 percent in 2024 and further to 57.74 percent in 2025.
Social Studies recorded its best performance in 2023 at 76.76 percent, up from 71.51 percent in 2022, remained steady at 71.53 percent in 2024, but also declined dramatically to 55.82 percent in 2025.
These figures highlight a very troubling inconsistency, especially the sharp decline across three subjects in 2025.
In my opinion, this points out the need for a comprehensive review of teaching methodologies, curriculum delivery and examination readiness.
It is essential that educators, policy makers and stakeholders collaborate to pinpoint the root causes and enact corrective measures.
Without urgent action, this fluctuation may weaken confidence in the examination system and hinder the progress of a competent future generation.
The data speaks for itself; Ghana must act now to stabilize and improve performance in these basic subjects.
No one should point fingers at the government; instead, we must all treat it as a collective responsibility to curb the problem at hand.
