Director of the Institute of Education at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Eric Anane, has attributed the 2025 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination failures to weaknesses carried over from the basic education level.
Mr. Anane noted that students’ chances of passing WASSCE is closely linked to the grades carried over from Junior High School, serving as a key predictor of student performance in Senior High School.
“If a student will pass in WASSCE, it’s about 21% depending on the grades they bring from Junior High School. It means that if your grades is not good, already the SHS system will identify your performance,” he highlighted.
Speaking further, he underscored the importance of self-regulation and value for the subject as a vital tool in ensuring student academic improvement, highlighting how it helps them navigate learning and improve comprehension.
“If a student needs help, who assists them, and how do they comprehend the studies? he asked speaking on Angel Morning Show( AMS) Tuesday, December 2, 2025,
“We have to ensure that what a student studies is very important, and the student must value the subject, because the absence of that can lead to poor performance,” he emphasized.
