President John Dramani Mahama has distance himself from the ongoing extradition process involving the Former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta emphasizing that the matter rests entirely within foreign jurisdiction.

Speaking at the Dialogue with Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) on Monday, March 30, 2026, he said Ghana has no control over the extradition process, noting that a request has already been filed and the country must wait.

“I cannot comment on extradition because It’s in a different jurisdiction and I have no control of it and all I know is that Ghana has put in an extradition request so we just have to be patient for the laws to layout in that jurisdiction,” President Mahama urged.

He added that the final decision lies outside Ghana’s jurisdiction and “we cannot be change it because it’s not within our jurisdiction.”

While the arrest was carried out by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) over alleged immigration violations, and extradition request by Ghana, President Mahama noted that the entire process lies in the hands of the judiciary, urging Ghanaians to be patience as the outcome unfolds.

“So we just have to be patient and see what happens but I know there are two parallel issue one is extradition request by Ghana and the other one is the immigration issue.

“The arrest was made by ICE for violating immigration status but then also there’s the additional issue of the extradition but like I said it’s all in the hands of the American judiciary and is not with the effort to influence that and so let’s just leave it and see what comes out,” he reiterated.
