The Ghana Immigration Service has interdicted five of its officers for allegedly assisting some foreign nationals to cross Ghana’s closed borders.
The foreigners are said to have been aided through illegal routes to Ghana by the immigration officers.
This is in breach of Ghana’s law including President Akufo-Addo’s Executive Instrument that closed the country’s borders until further notice to curb additional importation of the coronavirus pandemic.
The interdicted officers are: Asst. Inspector Isaac Ahiafor Agbeyenyega, Asst. Inspector Sarah Adubea, ICO Juliana Anning, ICO Jennifer Owusu Ansah, and R.O Joyce Nketia.
“This is to inform you that the above named officers have been interdicted with immediate effect,” a letter to all management members of GIS dated July 9 said.
The letter was also copied to the Commandant/ISA, the Commanding Officer/ISTS, all Sector Commanders, all Departments, Sectional and Units Heads as well as all Controls.
“It is consequent to their alleged involvement in the facilitation of illegal entries of foreign nationals through unapproved routes in the Aflao Sector Command,” the interdicting letter explained.
The Service said the actions of the officers constitute offences under Section 52(1) of the Immigration Act, 2. (Act 573).’
It was emphasised that what they did “also in breach of the President’s directives on border closure.”
While on interdiction, the officers would be entitled to two thirds (2/3) of their salary.
