The Awutu Senya Education Director has admonished parents and guardians to assist their wards inculcate the habit of reading and learning at home.
According to him, this would complement the efforts of teachers and help build a culture of reading and learning in the children thus yielding in high academic performances.
The Education Director made the suggestion during the 2022 Reading Festival held at the Awutu Senya West District in the Central Region, noting that “reading is the mother of all subjects” thus parents should support their children to adapt the habit of reading.
This follows the realization of the directorate that the children have been facing many challenges of which their parents have distinct roles to play in their ward’s education.
Speaking to Angel News reporter, Opanyin Darko, during the Reading Festival, the Awutu Senya Education Director, Isaac Acquaah Arhin cautioned parents to stop involving their children in activities that retrogress their learning but rather, they should assist the children and monitor their works.
“The teachers do their part when the children come to school. The parent should also check the assignments teachers give to their children when they come home.”
“Together both the teachers and the parents can help the children to be able to read English and Ghanaian Languages to improve their understand while growing so that they can perform well in academics,” Mr. Acquaah advised.
Meanwhile, the Directorate is appealing to NGOs, Individuals and the Government as a whole to support them with teaching and learning materials to enhance the children’s reading skills.
The Public Relations Officer for Awutu Senya Education Directorate, Madam Eunice Amponsah also averred that “we need reading books that can help the children to learn reading. We have some at the library but it is small so we need more to top it up to help them.”
