Akro Senior High Technical School (SHTS) has resumed classes two weeks after it was shut down by the Ghana Education Service, following a robbery cum lynching incident.
The school was closed temporarily after GES consulted with school authorities and the Municipal Security Council, in order to assess the situation on the ground and protect lives and property.
According to the Headmaster of the school, Charles Ossom Baah, everything is going on as planned and boarding students have begun reporting while awaiting their day counterparts.
He noted that the school had an early vacation due to the invasion of the girls’ dormitory on January 21, 2022, by Emmanuel Sackitey Kpabitey, who was lynched and his surviving accomplice, Odoi Solomon, now in critical condition at the hospital.
Explaining why the school has recorded few numbers following the resumption, the head boy stated that “because of the way things went, a lot of them [students] would like to hear the situation [now] before they come…we are sure later by evening a lot more would come. Today is only for boarders and our boarders are not many. We have close to 70% of our students being day students…”
Speaking in an interview with Angel FM’s Jaman Dehyee Opambuor, he added that dignitaries paid a visit to the school including the Regional Minister, the Regional Police Commander and the District Police Commander as classes commence.
Mr. Baah also indicated that the school is safe and students would be duly taken through guidance and counselling.
“The police would come and talk to them [about security]. We have slated the whole of tomorrow for education for the students. A lot of people would come in, both internal and external, and talk to them.”
Some of the students said they were apprehensive about returning to school but the following assurance from teachers they feel safe now.
Another noted that the presence of the police in school has kept her at ease.
