About 600 students of the Tolon Senior High School in the Tolon District of the Northern Region have been directed to go home by authorities.
The directive comes after the girls’ dormitory of the school was gutted by fire.
The fire is said to have started at about 8:00 am on Thursday, May 19, and has completely destroyed the top floor of the girls’ dormitory before the firefighters could bring it under control.
Items such as uniforms, chop boxes, and mattresses, among others, belonging to the students were destroyed by the fire.
Following the incident, school authorities have made arrangements for temporary abodes in the community and asked the students to stay there.
Speaking in a Citi News interview, the headmaster of the school, Mohammed Issifu, said that “the dormitory that accommodates the girls, the upper part has been completely burnt down. The assembly has a compound house in town, and within the school’s situation we are trying to see whether we can convert some classrooms into accommodation for the students.”
He added that “the school hasn’t been closed down, but students have been asked to temporarily go home and come back within a week.”
So far, the cause of the fire is unknown but the fire officers have commenced investigations into the incident which affected the girls’ dormitory.
