Midwives and Doctors at the Twifo Praso Government Hospital in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region have resorted to the use of phone lights and chargeable lamps to deliver babies and attend emergency cases.
This is due to the incessant chronic power outages that have plunged the country.
Some of the pregnant women who are due for delivery and their husbands explained to Angel News’ Shadrack Owusu Asante that the situation is taking a toll on their lives as it has slowed effective healthcare delivery.
Others described the situation as scary since they had a surgery appointment at the hospital on Monday, but were rescheduled to Wednesday because there was no light to assist the doctors.
Interestingly, a power plant at the facility is also not functioning; a situation which has led them to call on the authorities that be to fix the problem before it is too late.
Senior Health Service Administrator of the Twifo Praso District Hospital, Peter Teye Djamour reacting to the complains admitted that they used chargeable lamps for other operational works when they were facing challenges with their generator amid a power cut but the problem has been solved.
He added that in a situation where they have a power cut for 5 to 12 continuous hours, they would have to put off the generator due to the high cost of fuel.
On his side, the Medical Director at the facility, Dr. Kojo Lindsay appealed to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) to review its prices to enable the hospital to make enough money to purchase hospital equipment for quality healthcare delivery.
