Ghana Premier League outfit, Nsoatreman FC’s has withdraw their participation in the ongoing 2024/25 league campaign following its Sunday, match against Kumasi Asante Kotoko that was marred by violence and led to the loss of life.
According to the club, their decision stemmed from growing concerns over player and fan safety and the lack of adequate measures at match venues.
Their decision comes a day after a popular Kumasi Asante Kotoko supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong also known as ‘Pooley’ met his untimely death after the game between the two teams.
Asante Kotoko confirmed the incident and noted that, the deceased succumbed to his injury after he was stabbed multiple times by yet-to-be identified person.
Nsoatreman FC in light of the tragedy that has become a subject for discussion in the sporting fraternity says they are pulling out of the topflight football following thorougly deliberations by management of the team.
This incident has highlighted the growing concerns over crowd control, hooliganism, and the safety of fans attending matches in the country
“Considering the possible consequential effect it is likely to have on the league and other clubs, however, the club believed that yesterday’s regrettable incident which unfortunately resulted in a loss of life cannot be counterbalance without any other remedial measure.
This move is a demonstration of our revulsion to the densely act perpetrated by hooligans at the Nana Koronamansah Stadium in the game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko,” A formal letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said as read by Sir Joe Laka of Kesben TV.
They stated in the letter that “Football should be played in atmosphere of tolerance, love and sportsmanship, the Board of Directors believe that allowing the club to continue playing in the league might in affectedly in as pale the pain of the bereaved family.”
Nsoatreman FC also send its deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereave family, the GFA and all stakeholders in the country.
