Politician Akwasi Addai Odike has expressed disappointment in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for prioritising the selection of a flagbearer over internal reforms, ahead of the next general elections.
According to Odike, the opposition party’s current focus on who leads it into the next electoral battle is misplaced.
The Presidential hopeful believes structural and leadership reformation should be the primary concern of NPP leadership.
“Where I sit, to me, the two candidates Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia are not the ideal bets to lead NPP and pull votes by being attractive to the grassroots.
“In order for the NPP to be attractive, they need structural leadership reforms and open-hearted service, rather than the haste in electing a flagbearer,” Odike said during a panel discussion on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Monday, June 23, 2025.
He further argued that key figures such as Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong are already familiar to the Ghanaian public and well-known for their individual political traits, which according to him, makes the current competition redundant.
Odike stressed that the NPP would be better off addressing systemic issues within the party and putting its internal structures in order to build a unified and compelling front.
According to him, such reforms would provide a strong foundation that naturally supports the emergence of a credible leader.
The politician who is also businessman proposed that, “the best thing is to focus on the structural effect, which will be a driving force to enable the party’s attractiveness to metamorphose into the elected leader.”
His remarks come in the wake of ongoing discussions around the NPP’s decision to hold an early congress to choose a flagbearer, a move that some critics say could deepen internal divisions within the party.
