Leader of the Union Government, Akwasi Addai Odike, has criticized the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over what he describes as poor handling of security during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run.
Mr. Odike stated that the pockets of violence and the conduct of police personnel deployed to provide security were the least one could have expected from them.
“The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is my very own friend, but I will frankly tell him that he did not act proactively in the provision of security at the Ablekuma North election.
“How can police officers be standing unconcerned, fold their hands at their back to watch while a woman is being attacked and dragged on the grounds, all in the name of equalisation because under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, a similar incident occurred,” Odike stated on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) hosted by Saddick Adams.
He added that the violent scenes at the polling center clearly showed that the police were not fully in control of security on the day of the election.
“You [government] have shown clearly that the police are not in charge at the polling stations,” he said.
According to Odike, the level of insecurity and unfairness should have led the Electoral Commission to nullify the election results.
“Free is that voters must be protected to ensure that they go to the polling centers safely and return home safely. The fair also demands that all candidates contesting in an election are given a level playing field, so when the free did not imply, how do we describe it free and fair?” he quizzed.
