A group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, known as the Gallant Patriots, has warned the party leadership against imposing a candidate ahead of the upcoming by-election.
Addressing the press during a briefing held in Akyem Boadua, Friday, July 18, 2025, the convenor Akonoba Nana Boadu, urged the NPP leadership to desist from any attempt to impose a candidate on them.
He explained that the party is already facing internal disunity, and any attempt to impose a candidate instead of conducting a primary will deepen division within the party, resulting in a likely loss of the seat to the opposition.
“The wave already in Akwatia is not pleasant at all. So we plead on party executives in the Constituency, Regional level, and National level that we want fair playing grounds.
“Party leadership should allow any potential candidates with the will to serve the constituency to pick nomination forms, contest the primary, and let the people decide who they want to represent in Parliament,” the group suggested.
He emphasized that any eligible and competent member of the party in the Akwatia Constituency should be permitted, stating it is the only viable option to unify the party towards victory.
“But if decision makers impose a candidate, then they should understand the kind of precedent they are setting.”
According to the Gallant Patriots, the NPP should forget winning the Akwatia by-election failure to heed to their suggestions and call as many people will refuse to vote for the party.
