As anticipation builds ahead of Ghana’s Black Queens clash with Algeria in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a rallying call for victory and expressed the team’s readiness to overcome a strong Algerian side.
The crucial quarterfinal encounter is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Ghana secured their spot in the last eight after finishing second in Group C, bouncing back from a defeat to South Africa and a draw with Mali before sealing a commanding 4-1 win over Tanzania.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum, expressed confidence in the team’s preparations while acknowledging the quality of their North African opponents.
“I watched them [Algeria] against Nigeria. They’re a good team, very intense, very direct. But our technical team has a fair idea of what to expect and is preparing the players accordingly,” he stated.
Ghana is seeking to reach the WAFCON semifinals for the first time since 2016 to break the jinx and re-establish themselves among the elite teams on the continent.
Mr. Twum emphasized the importance of pushing beyond past limitations, noting the team’s hunger to return to the top tier of African women’s football is imminent.
“We belong to the best, so we have to try as much as possible to make it to the last four. We haven’t reached the semis since 2016, that’s quite a long time,” he added.
He continued, admitting that “It won’t be easy, but we’re ready to go past Algeria,” Mr. Twum said, with optimism in their quest to end a near-decade-long semifinal drought.
Victory on Saturday would see Ghana face either Morocco or Mali in the semifinals, and vice versa should Algeria also go through.
