Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for amending its constitution to make the National Chairman the leader of the party at all times.
Reacting to the development, Anyidoho described the move as significant and consistent with efforts he previously supported within the NDC.
“Very interesting development. National Chmn, Leader at all times? I’ve always supported this position to maintain the supremacy of the parties as happens elsewhere. As Deputy GS, I supported such a move in NDC – not too late though to change. TG our democracy is growing.”
He further commented on the governance implications of the amendment, stressing the need to clarify the role of party leaders in national structures.
“From a purely governance perspective, I want to believe that once the NC is the Leader, it will insulate the person from being on any Board. Because why would the Leader want to serve on a Board under a Minister? Let’s see how the narrative goes,” he said further on his socials.
Anyidoho added that the development places a higher demand on political parties to choose competent individuals to lead them.
“Of course, it only means that lots more critical thinking must inform who they decide to be their National Chairman & Leader. It adds a new page to Ghana’s political narrative book and it looks positively interesting,” he expressed.
The NPP’s constitutional change, which seeks to strengthen internal party leadership structures was amended over the weekend at its National Delegate Conference.
