Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has responded to rising public concerns about mobile data consumption and pricing by announcing the formation of a specialized taskforce.
The taskforce, according to him, has been deployed at the National Communications Authority (NCA) and across all mobile network operators to investigate and address user complaints.
Addressing the media on Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on Friday, August 1, 2025, the Minister acknowledged the topical nature of the issue and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests.
“I would also segue here into the use that has become topical of data and data that has been running faster and disappearing. Let me be clear, my fidelity and that of the Ministry, and that of President Mahama, is to the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
While expressing empathy with consumers, Hon. George cautioned that the Ministry will act only based on verifiable facts, not sentiments.
“Our interest is the best interest to the Ghanaian people. However, these are technical issues that we will only act on the basis of evidence and not sentiments,” he said.
He disclosed that the taskforce has already begun working on complaints lodged through social media and other channels.
“I have seen a number of complaints on social media and I have set up a specialized taskforce at the NCA and at all the mobile network operators to deal with these complaints,” he revealed.
After thorough investigations, he said, it has been found that most of the issues stem from user settings and behaviors, not price manipulation by service providers.
“Let me state on the record, every single one of the complaints that have been referred to the team have been investigated, and all of them have proven that all it is user settings and user behaviors that have affected the use of their data and that there has been no price tampering.”
He however issued a strong warning to telecom companies, emphasizing that any attempt to breach pricing regulations approved by the NCA will not be tolerated.
“Let me reiterate, I will not hesitate to deal decisively as minister with any telecom company that falters or alters the pricing that is approved by the NCA. But unless there is evidence of sin, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by the evidence.”
The Minister’s firm response comes in the wake of growing consumer frustration over data consumption rates and cost, sparking widespread debate online.
