Legal practitioner, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has emerged winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary held on Monday, August 4, 2025, ahead of the by-election.
The party’s constituency secretary polled 380 votes to beat his close contender, Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes.
Henry Yiadom Boakye, a former Member of Parliament for the area, garnered 232 votes.
The NDC primary was tightly contested among three aspirants: Henry Yiadom Boakye, the former MP who lost his seat in December 2024; Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a constituency executive and lawyer; and Erasmus Ali Korney, an entrepreneur.
Baidoo was declared the winner by the Regional Electoral Commission Director, Appiah Baffoe, following his victory.
With this outcome, the crucial Akwatia by-election slated for September 2 will be fiercely contested between Bernard Bediako Baidoo and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
The by-election became necessary following the sudden demise of the sitting MP, late Ernest Yaw Kumi, in July 2025.
