Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has rolled out a comprehensive set of digital reforms to modernise the country’s passport system and make the process faster, safer, and more accessible to citizens.
The initiative, known as the Reset Passport Reforms, introduces a range of technological and administrative upgrades, including chip-embedded passports, same-day delivery, nationwide courier services, 24-hour passport operations, and electronic tracking of applications.
Announcing the reforms on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the changes form part of government’s broader agenda to enhance efficiency and restore public confidence in state services.

“These reforms are designed to make the Ghanaian passport not only easier to obtain but also more secure and globally respected,” the minister wrote, adding that the updates align with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
The Ministry also disclosed that the new system has cleared a backlog of over 40,000 undelivered passports, reducing delivery time to under 15 days. Applicants will now be able to track their passport applications electronically and opt for delivery to their doorstep through courier services.
Under the new policy, Ghana’s passport has gained 11 new visa waiver agreements, expanding the travel opportunities available to Ghanaian citizens. This development, Mr. Ablakwa said, reflects the growing diplomatic influence of Ghana on the global stage.
He added that government plans to establish passport application centres in all sixteen regions by the end of the year to ensure nationwide access and efficiency.
