Economic activities at Agordeke, a farming community in the Afram Plains North District, have come to a grinding halt due to a broken-down ferry, leaving residents and traders in a state of desperation.
The ferry, which connects Agordeke to Kpando, has been out of commission for over a month, disrupting the transportation of goods and people.
The ferry’s breakdown has brought hardship to farmers and traders who rely on it to transport their produce. Residents are forced to use wooden engine boats, which are unsafe and expensive.
Nana Akuamoah Boateng Tano II, Chief of Donkorkrom No.1, appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, who commissioned the ferry in 2016, to come to their aid.
“We plead with President Mahama to come to our aid, especially because he was the one who provided it for us,” Nana Akuamoah Boateng Tano II, Chief of Donkorkrom No.1, said.
The broken-down ferry has also brought back painful memories of the 1995 boat disaster that claimed 140 lives on the same route. Speaking for the concerned citizens of Afram Plains,Awudu Yakubu Omoro is urging the government to act quickly to prevent another tragedy.
“It is rather unfortunate that for one month, two weeks now, the engine of the ferry has broken down. We are appealing to the government to provide the necessary resources to fix the ferry because we travel in fear,” a resident stated.
