The government of Ghana has strongly condemned the military coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau, expressing profound concern over the disruption of the country’s democratic process.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, November 27, 2025, the coup, carried out by elements of the military, represents a direct assault on democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau.
The coup occurred after the peaceful conduct of presidential and legislative elections on November 23rd, and has obstructed the scheduled announcement of election results on November 27th.
In the press release, Ghana calls for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau, urging all actors to respect the democratic process.
The government emphasises that any grievances arising from the elections must be addressed through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.
Ghana also demands that the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau be safeguarded, with particular emphasis on protecting officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in the country.
Appealing to the people of Guinea-Bissau, Ghana urges them to remain calm, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid actions that may escalate tensions.
The Government of Ghana reaffirms its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated response to the situation, in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
