A tragic incident occurred at Blue Rose Estate at Buduburam – Central Region, where an eight-year-old boy, Elijah Carbah, lost his life after falling into an abandoned, water-filled manhole.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), an emergency call was received at 7:40 am. on Friday, November 28, 2025, and promptly dispatched a rescue team led by Station Officer II Farouk Balorbey.
Upon arrival at 7:54am, the team found that a 16-year-old boy had already been rescued by neighbours and taken to St. Gregory Hospital.
The rescue team, with community support, retrieved Elijah from the manhole and rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead.
The Service has expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the public to be vigilant around open water hazards.
The Fire Service is also calling on developers to cover unused manholes to prevent similar incidents and encouraging citizens to report emergencies immediately by calling 112 / 0201500360 / 0302772446.
The GNFS further pledged to intensify drowning-prevention education to help avert similar incidents and remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the country.
