Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee in Parliament, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has added his voice to the recent concerns about the upward adjustment of utility tariffs announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
He acknowledged that no Ghanaian is pleased with the increase, but explained that the adjustment is necessary to support the capital and operational expenses of utility providers.
“Ghanaians deserve tariff reductions. However, this recent adjustment has nothing to do with the usual quarterly changes. It’s meant to help meet the capital needs of the utility companies,” he stated in a monitored interview Joy News, Monday, December 8, 2025.
On December 2, 2025, the PURC released a public statement confirming new utility tariffs under its 2026–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Review (MYTO), set to take effect from 1st January 2026. Electricity and water tariffs have been increased by 9.86% and 15.92%, respectively.
He made a breakdown that; this means a GH¢1 electricity bill will now cost GH¢1.10, while a GH¢1 water bill will rise to GH¢1.16. Mr Adomako Mensah also noted that another review could take place by March 2026, depending on economic factors.
“When tariffs go up, Ghanaians should also see a satisfactory level of service and I’m hoping ECG, VRA and other agencies will improve, work harder to deliver better results,” said the Afigya Kwabre North Member of Parliament.
