The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced the suspension of its planned rollout of new licence plates, which was originally scheduled to commence on January 2, 2026.
The Authority explained that the introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) embedded plates was intended to enhance traceability and promote road safety.
However, in a statement released Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the DVLA said the legislative process required to enable the rollout has not been fully completed.
According to the release, while Parliament successfully amended the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683), the specific provisions in the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which detail the requirements for licence plates, were not passed before Parliament went on recess on December 19, 2025.
“As a result, due to the fact that the L.I. 2180 amendment have not gone through, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) announces to the general public the suspension of the impending rollout of the new licence plate slated for January 2, 2026,” it said.
The Authority has therefore announced the extended use of current Departure from Port (DP) stickers and DV plates.
DVLA assured the public that the new licence plate rollout will take effect once the legislative requirements are settled.
The Authority expressed gratitude for the public’s support and cooperation.
