The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, says Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge to allocate 10 government appointments per constituency under a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been positively received by party delegates and could significantly boost his chances in the party’s presidential primaries.
According to Hon. Acquah, the proposal strongly appeals to the party’s grassroots, many of whom, he noted, felt overlooked in previous administrations despite the government’s overall governance performance.
He attributed the NPP’s defeat in the last general elections partly to the party’s inability to adequately address the concerns and welfare of its grassroots supporters.
“The party lost the last elections because it failed to pay attention to its grassroots, even though the government performed well in governance,” he stated.
Hon. Acquah explained that the absence of a deliberate and structured approach to supporting party foot soldiers created frustration and dissatisfaction among loyal supporters at the base of the party.
He said Dr. Bawumia’s constituency-based appointment proposal has therefore been welcomed by delegates as a practical and meaningful step towards recognising and rewarding grassroots contributions.
The Akim Oda MP further noted that Dr. Bawumia stands out among the aspirants contesting the NPP flagbearership, citing his experience and performance as Vice President. He said Dr. Bawumia’s record in government places him in a strong position and has reinforced delegates’ confidence in his leadership ahead of the primaries.
The NPP presidential primaries are scheduled for January 31, 2026, during which delegates nationwide will elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Dr. Bawumia is among the leading contenders, alongside Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The outcome of the primaries will determine the NPP’s candidate for the 2028 elections and shape the party’s campaign direction going forward.
