Two schoolchildren have tragically lost their lives after drowning in a manhole at their residence in Abokobi, a suburb of Somanya in the Eastern Region.
The victims, eight-year-old Jason Teye Mensah and nine-year-old Nathaniel Ayernor Kofi, were pupils of Samsalo Preparatory School at Odumase Krobo.
Their bodies were discovered on Thursday evening, February 12, 2026, after an intense but unsuccessful search by family members earlier in the day.
According to reports, the deceased—pupils in classes two and three—had returned from school but were later reported missing when they could not be found at home.
This prompted a thorough and coordinated search by the family. Sadly, after several hours, their lifeless bodies were discovered in the manhole at about 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Jaman Dehyia Opambour told Angelonline.com.gh that the manhole in the area was not properly secured, posing a danger to residents.
He noted that personnel from the Somanya Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were called to the scene and pumped water out of the manhole before successfully retrieving the bodies.
The Somanya Police Command conveyed the bodies to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the drowning incident.
Somanya District Police Commander, Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, who led the team to the scene, pledged to inform the general public of the outcome of the investigation once it is concluded.
