Don’t dream of going to parliament to make money – Daniel Ashiamah to youth

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem, Daniel Kwasi Ashiamah, has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over Ghana’s economic challenges, urging its members to remain silent after what he described as their mismanagement of the economy.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Ashiamah accused the NPP of squandering the economic gains left by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to him, despite inheriting a stable economy, the ruling party failed to manage the country’s finances efficiently, leading to severe financial hardships.

“The NDC created funds that the NPP could not manage. Now that we are back to reset the economy, they should shut up with their propaganda” he said.

Ashiamah argued that the current unemployment rate has risen significantly, from 8% to 14%, due to the government’s inability to sustain job creation. He claimed that the NPP had to resort to borrowing to pay workers, further worsening the country’s debt situation.

He praised President John Dramani Mahama’s recent cost-cutting measures, including reducing the number of ministers from 125 to 60, banning first-class travel for government officials, and enforcing a strict code of conduct. He insisted that these measures prove the economy is in crisis and needs urgent intervention.

“If the country had enough money, President Mahama wouldn’t need to introduce these policies. The truth is, there’s no money. The NPP increased employment, but they did not create enough jobs to sustain it. Where is the money to pay these workers? They have messed up the economy, and they should know that. If you check the balance sheet, the truth is clear,” Ashiamah said.

His comments come at a time when discussions on Ghana’s economic recovery and governance are intensifying. As the country strives to stabilize the economy, Ashiamah called on Ghanaians to back policies that promote fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth.
