A Communication Team Member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu has criticized Ghana’s school counseling system, describing it as weak and in need of significant improvement to better support students.

He emphasised that these weaknesses hinder the emotional and psychological support available to students.

According to Mr. Owusu, the counseling units in the country are weak; however, this has caused significant disruption in the country’s schools.

He stated that second-cycle students in Ghana should receive proper counseling to ensure they make informed decisions about entering university.

Speaking on the Morning Show (AMS) during a panel discussion on March 18, 2025, he stated that every student must be guided before choosing any program of their choice when entering tertiary institutions in the country.

“Another critical aspect of our education is the counseling system; our counseling unit is so weak. When the children are applying to enter school, we don’t have anyone to guide or explain things to them, the reasons why they should choose particular programs,” Mr. Owusu expressed concerns.

Mr. Owusu further condemned universities in the country for sometimes not granting students their preferred programs when they apply to tertiary institutions.

He noted that many students are disappointed when they do not receive their preferred programs and emphasized that this behavior must stop to ease the burden on students.

He added that every student should be placed in their first-choice program and should not be denied their preferred program.
