GPL: Asante Kotoko drop points at home after Mbella penalty misses

Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Sunday, May 8, 2022, failed to extend their lead at the Ghana Premier League summit after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Aduana Stars at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Cameroonian hitman, Franck Mbella Etouga, scored the porcupine warrior’s only goal in the 39th minute in the first department of the game but missed two penalties in the second half.

Despite missing opportunities to add up to his goal-scoring tally, he still leads the top-scoring chat in the ongoing league with 19 goals, followed by Yaw Annor of Ashanti Gold with 16 and 14 by Dormaa Aduana Stars’ Bright Adjei.

The leaders who failed to increase their tally after squandering two spot-kicks, saw the Dormaa-based side score a late equalizer through talisman, Bright Adjei to leave the Baba Yara Stadium with a point.

With the draw, Kumasi Kotoko Asante is nine points ahead of second-place Bechem United, who drew with Accra Hearts of Oak in Bechem on Saturday. They also have a 12-point clear lead over their arc rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak with six games to go.

Meanwhile, Accra Great Olympics defeated Berekum Chelsea by 2-0 on Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium, thanks to Samuel Ashie-Quaye and Amos Acheampong’s goals.

At the Akoon Park in Tarkwa, Medeama SC beat Obuasi AshantiGold 2-0, whiles Dawu-based Dreams FC and Real Tamale United shared the spoils in Dawu following a 2-2 scoreline.

Relegation-threatening teams, Elmina Sharks and WAFA played to a 2-2 draw at the Ndoum Stadium in Elmina.

Eleven Wonders climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 hard-fought win over Karela United at home while Kumasi King Faisal also suffered a 2-1 away loss to Bibiani Gold Stars at the Duns park in Bibiani.
