Residents of Gwira Amgbanzi bemoan poor state of bridge linking communities

Some residents of Gwira Amgbanzi at the Evalue Gwira Constituency in the Western Region have expressed worry about the poor state of the only wooden bridge linking their community to other communities.

According to the residents, the dilapidated bridge poses a threat to the lives of those who commute on it.

The wooden bridge serves as a link between Gwira Amgbanzie and adjoining communities thus serving a total population of about 1,200.

Speaking to Angel FM’s reporter, Nana Fynn, some residents lamented that the bridge has become a death trap and therefore vehicles are unable to ply it.

The inability of vehicles to use the bridge has resulted in farmers carrying farm produce on their heads over long distances before crossing the bridge.

The direst situation for residents is having to carry sick persons who need urgent medical attention on foot since vehicles can’t access the bridge, and that worsens their condition due to the delays on the way.

A resident shared that “when the river overflows, the water reaches our waist level. Though there is another river we cannot afford the two cedis charge for canoe [rides] to cross to the other side.”

“When someone falls sick it takes two people to help you cross and it is really disturbing so the government should come and help because we are part of Ghana,” he pleaded.

Another resident also concluded, “now we cannot go and come, especially the children unless we wait for the river to recede before we all can attend to our activities. This is our major road so when it rains, it really causes us problems.”

Residents, therefore, used the opportunity to call on authorities to come to their aid by helping them fix the ‘death trap bridge’ to avoid the danger it poses, especially, to their children.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the Evalue Adjomorro Gwira Constituency, Kofi Arko Nokoe, says he is looking for funds to fix the bridge permanently for the residence.
