Five AK-47 rifles and 100 rounds of ammunition have reportedly gone missing from the armoury of the Northern Regional Police Command.
The missing rifles and ammunition were issued out to officers of Operation Calm Life to carry out their duties but have not been returned to the armoury.
This disclosure was contained in the 2020 Auditor General’s report.
“Our inspection at the Armoury of the Tamale Station revealed that five AK-47 rifles and 100 rounds of ammunitions could not be accounted for…”, the audit report said.
It continued that “there was also no available information as to the whereabout of these rifles”.
According to the Auditor General’s report, Francis Binfoh, Agatha Nana Nabin, Josephine Awo Atoproke, Amos Maduku and Brigette Detornu are the five offices from Operation Calm Life who were issued the ‘lost’ arms and ammunition.
Though the case has been reported to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (RCID) for investigation, the RCID could not provide the audit team with the status of the investigation being carried out to ensure the retrieval of the rifles.
On February 5, 2018, government launched ‘Operation Calm Life’ to combat criminal activities in the Northern Region.
About 300 security personnel were drawn from all the law enforcement agencies and put together for the initiative.
