The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on government, the police and other stakeholders to strictly enforce the COVID-19 preventive measures during the Christmas festivities to avert a possible fourth wave.

According to the GMA the surge in COVID-19 cases if not checked will further weaken the already fragile health system in the country.

On that note the association called on the Police Service, the Tourism Authority as well as MMDAs to regulate events of mass gatherings during the Christmas festivities.

In a statement issued on December 22, 2021 the GMA called on “Central Government, the Ghana Police Service, all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) as well as the Ghana Tourism Authorism Authority to strictly enforce all COVID -19 protocols at all events and celebrations (and bring all offenders to book without fear or favour) to prevent a potential deadly fourth wave…”

It added that “social activities such as parties, night clubs, church services, market activities, funerals and other mass gatherings of such nature should be regulated or restricted”.

GMA warned that failure to heed this caution would result in dire consequences for all Ghanaians come 2022.

President of the association, Dr. Frank Serebour, encouraged government to supply PPEs to all health workers in the various health institutions promptly.

He also advocated the scale up of COVID-19 testing and contact tracing for all positive cases as well as strict isolation  and management of all infected persons to help break the chain of transmission.

The GMA finally entreated all Ghanaians to take their personal safety into their hands by adhering strictly to all the COVID-19 safety protocols during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
