The Judicial Service says it has commenced investigations into the accidental discharge of a live weapon at the Law Court Complex in Accra.

The incident happened on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at the High Court, Criminal Division, Court ‘5’, where a Prison Warden on duty accidentally discharged his weapon and injured his foot.

The injured officer [name withheld] was among some officers accompanying the four suspects standing trial for unlawful kidnapping of the Canadian girls.

Following the incident, the presiding judge at the Criminal Court 5, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo immediately suspended proceedings.

A statement from the Judicial Service signed and issued by its Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela A. Addo, admitted the likelihood of fear and panic the incident might pose within the Court.

“This is the first time such an incident has occurred within the courts thus likely to cause fear and panic.

“However, the general public is hereby informed that thorough investigations are underway, whilst security measures are being put in place to avoid a future occurrence,” it added.

The Management of the Judicial Service therefore, assures all stakeholders and the general public of their safety in and around the Court.

The injured Prison Warden is said to be responding to treatment at the Judicial Service Clinic in Accra.
