Police in the Ashanti Region have rescued the Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, from a ‘mob’ attack over delays in the construction of the Suame-Maakro road.
Some angry residents within the Suame-Magazine business enclave pelted their MP with sachets of water and other items while hooting at him.
The attack on the legislator, who doubles as the Majority Leader of Parliament, came when the MP attempted to address residents in the area after work on the Suame-Maakro road resumed.
Prior to the Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu’s visit, residents in the area demonstrated last week over delays in the reconstruction of the main highway from Suame Roundabout through Maakro to Afrancho while calling on authorities to ensure work resumes.
But the legislator, together with his entourage including the Municipal Chief Executive for Suame, Maxwell Ofosu Boakye upon arrival were met by hostile artisans and had to be saved by the police.
Addressing the media after the attack, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu assured that the road would be completed as early as possible.
“If they are really angry that it has been a while since the scraping of the surface and the dust is killing them, certainly when they see any government official, they will vent their spleen on the person. So I am not worried,” Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.
