Ghanaian Light Heavyweight boxer Shakul Samed has been suspended from the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
This was after he tested positive for a banned substance at the competition on Friday, July 29, 2022.
The Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement that Samed’s A sample contained the banned diuretic and masking agent Furosemide.
“He has therefore been suspended with immediate effect,” the statement said.
“He will now have the opportunity to provide further information, including requesting analysis of his B sample, before any charge is issued” the statement added.
The light-heavyweight boxer was scheduled to face Luc Jean Rosalba on Friday but did not show up for the weigh-in.
Samed, who competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is the first athlete to fail a drug test at the Birmingham Games, which kick-started on Friday.
The CWG Federation further added that the organizing committee has a zero-tolerance policy on doping in sports.
“We seek to maintain the integrity of the Commonwealth Games by running comprehensive anti-doping programme that focuses equally on education, prevention and testing.”
