A member of the Communication team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chris Dugan, has recounted the record of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in borrowing.

According to Mr Dugan, the NPP’s record in terms of borrowing, is unmatched and has no competitor in the history book of Ghana politics.

Speaking with Kwamina Sam Biney on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, edition of the Anopa Bofo morning show, Chris Dugan said without any fear, no government comes near the NPP in terms of borrowing.

His comment was in reaction to a statement made by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia while in opposition that, the then NDC administration led by John Mahama, reduced governance to borrowing which amounted to a lazy man’s approach.

But to Mr. Dugan, the same personwho is now Vice President and leader of the economic management team of the government, has made a U-turn to seek for an economic bailout at the International Monetary Fund due to mismanagement of the economy.

He was quick to label that as a “walking contradiction” on the part of the NPP government because, it failed to fix the problem they claimed to have identified under the NDC administration.

“… everyone in this country knows that there is no government that borrows more than the Akufo-Addo government,” he added.

He pointed out that the NPP government which once said taxing people to build the country is like standing in a bucket to lift it, is now taxing the poor with the implementation of the controversial E-Levy.

Chris Dugan, however, admitted that the NDC supports borrowing, therefore, it would not take the stance the ruling government took while in opposition against borrowing all in the name of partisan politics.

“You see, I will say it today and I will continue to say it, NDC government and former president John Mahama supports borrowing [because] borrowing is not shyness, there’s no shyness to borrow and we will not behave like them [NPP] who say A and do B,” he stressed.
