‘Kasoa soldier killer’ remanded into police custody

The Achimota District Court has remanded Benlord Ababio alias Barima Ababio, for allegedly shooting and killing an army officer, Lance Corporal Micheal Danso, over a land dispute in Kasoa, Central Region.

The prosecution led by Assistant Supretendent of Police, Lawrence Anane narrating the facts of the case said, deccased No. 210715 Lance CorporaI Michael Danso (No. 210715) was stationed at Army Base workshop. Burma Camp in Accra.

The accused person Benlord Ababio alias Nana Barima Ababio is a self-acclaimed traditional ruler in Kasoa.

He said on the April 30, 2024 about 4:00 pm, the deceased officer together with his two colleagues, Lance Corporal Abdul Omar Rahman and Lance Corporal Ametus Mathew, went to the Millennium City Police station on board a Toyota Rav 4 vehicle with registration number 3591-24 to report a case of trespass on a parcel of land  belonging to Lance Corporal Abdul Omar Rahman.

The accused person appeared at the Police station, attacked and opened fire Lance Corporal Michael Danso who was  driving the vehicle killing him instantly.

The accused person was immediately disarmed and arrested for investigation. He was brought before the court for remand while vestigation continues.

Counsel for Benlord prayed for bail insisting his client was “innocent and ready to stand trial to prove his innocence.”

But the Prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Anane, objected to the request of the lawyer and pleaded with the court to remand the accused person because, they are still investigating and for his own safety, he thinks it is in his own interest and that of the state to remand him.

He also told the court that the accused will interfere in investigations if granted bail as per the nature and punishment of the of fence, the accused will not avail himself to stand trial.

The court, presided by Prince Owusu, remanded the accused person into police custody and is to reappear on the May 16, 2024.
