President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to stay alert and speak out against tribalism, religious extremism, and political hostility to protect the country’s unity and peace.
President Mahama emphasized that churches and mosques in Ghana coexist in mutual respect and dignity, reinforcing the idea that different traditions and backgrounds have strengthened the nation.
Speaking during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the forecourt of the State House today July 1, 2025, the President urged the use of language of peace, compassion, and mutual respect.
He advocated building bridges rather than barriers to foster unity.
“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, the voices of religious extremism and against the poison of political division. These are the seeds of division that we must never let take root in our precious nation, Ghana,”
He mentioned Ghana’s abundance of resources and natural beauty and highlighted the country’s unique spiritual harmony and religious tolerance.
President Mahama also urged Ghanaians to hold those in authority, including himself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility.
He said public office is not a privilege for personal gain, adding that it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable.
He reaffirmed his belief in equality before the law, stating, “Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”
“We must hold those in authority, including myself, accountable to the highest standards of integrity and humility. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people and a responsibility to serve all, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.
Cardinal Peter Turkson while preaching at Ghana’s first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving also emphasized the need for individuals to find their personal roles within a collective vision, focusing on fostering virtuous Ghanaians.
He highlighted that developing good character and leading by example are crucial for maintaining balance in life.
According to him, without virtuous behavior, greed can easily take over and harm everyone.
He urged Ghanaians to build a strong moral foundation to ward off the negative effects of greed.
