President John Dramani Mahama will on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, host a historic Africa Health Sovereignty Summit at Kempinski Hotel, Accra, bringing together African Heads of State, policymakers, and global health stakeholders.
The high-level gathering aims to reimagine global health governance in light of today’s shifting geopolitical and economic realities.
A release issued Sunday, August 3, 2025, by the spokesperson to the President & Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the summit, convened under the leadership of President Mahama, is expected to usher in a new era of health sovereignty anchored in national ownership, domestic investment, and African-led solutions.
Over the past decades, the world has witnessed significant health progress child mortality has been halved since 1990, maternal deaths have dropped by over 40% since 2000, and deaths from HIV/AIDS have declined significantly.
However, these gains are now under threat due to declining multilateralism, reduced donor support, and emerging health challenges.
