Government Communication Team member, Halidu Ibrahim (Esq) has said that AT was facing numerous challenges after their restructuring, which led the government to takeover and help them out.
In a panel discussion on the Angel Morning Show (AMS), on Thursday, October 16, 2025, he explained that due to AT’s 200 million dollar debt and other challenges they faced, government decided to put measures in place by merging them with Telecel to ensure the effectiveness of their network.
“Government moved 3 million customers of AT to the roaming services of Telecel, it did not sell it to Telecel,” he emphasized.
According to the private legal practitioner, American Tower Company (ATC), who are the providers of tower sites, blocked AirtelTigo’s access to the power source due to the debt, causing disruption to their network and operations.
“The blockage affected three major services including data, call and mobile money,” he added.
Alidu further explained that recently, Rektron Company is to invest 150 million dollars in AT to help stabilize its network in the next five years.
