Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has bemoaned the country’s staggering food import bill, which stands at a whopping $4 billion annually.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Mr. Ayariga emphasized that this huge expenditure is a clear indication that the country has failed to effectively utilize its vast arable lands, leading to a significant setback in achieving food self-sufficiency.
“Every year, we head to National Farmers’ Day, but our food imports stand at $3.5 billion and sometimes reach $4.5 billion every year.
“Why would Ghana, with the biggest man-made lake in its center, be carrying such an enormous amount yearly to import food?” he questioned.
His comments come ahead of the 2025 National Farmers’ Day, an occasion that is meant to celebrate Ghana’s agricultural achievements.
