President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghana’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to uphold transparency, accountability, and cost-effective management in all diplomatic missions.
Speaking at a commissioning ceremony at the Presidency on Monday, 9 February 2026, President Mahama said Ghana’s diplomacy must reflect the government’s ‘reset agenda,’ emphasizing efficiency, integrity, and results-driven governance.
He instructed heads of missions to strictly comply with directives on procurement, spending, and cost containment, including rent ceilings for embassies and high commissions.
“Our diplomacy must be known not only for excellence, but also for value for money, transparency, and responsible stewardship of public resources,” he said.
“Every cedi spent abroad must reflect the highest standards of prudence and accountability.”
President Mahama said ambassadors are expected to combine high performance with discipline, ensuring that mission operations align with Ghana’s development priorities while maintaining ethical conduct.
He stressed that diplomatic representation is ultimately about character, professionalism, and service, adding that ambassadors are the living faces of the nation abroad.
The President further urged ambassadors to foster teamwork within missions, maintain harmonious work environments, and execute their responsibilities with diligence and prudence.
He said these measures would strengthen Ghana’s international credibility and ensure that every diplomatic engagement delivers tangible benefits for the country.
The ceremony formally commissioned the new batch of high commissioners and ambassadors-designates, tasking them with promoting Ghana’s interests abroad, protecting its reputation, and contributing to national development through disciplined and accountable diplomacy.
