The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government to create an enabling environment where media institutions in the country can thrive.
He believes this would help the media operate freely without fear, intimidation, or arbitrary interference.
The MP, who also serves as Second Deputy Minority Whip, made the statement on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 13, 2026, in commemoration of this year’s World Radio Day.
Mr. Shaib stressed that democracy thrives when journalists are protected and empowered to do their work independently.
He further urged media owners to “invest in their newsrooms, ensuring that journalists are equipped with the skills, ethical grounding, and adequate resources required to report with fairness, accuracy, and integrity.”
He also called for stronger, forward-looking laws that firmly entrench protections for radio broadcasting.
