As part of an initiative aimed at decongesting urban areas, especially Accra, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concern over what he describes as a failure of leadership in Ghana’s social services, amid a growing trend of street fundraising for sick individuals.
According to Godwin Ako Gunn, deputy National Communications Officer for the NDC, this trend under the guise of helping the sick is becoming both disturbing and irritating.

He condemned the practice and called on decision-making bodies to urgently address the issue.
“That one is the most annoying. You sometimes see a sick child lying on a bed under the scorching sun, all in the name of raising funds,” he said.
His remarks follow the Ghana Immigration Service’s campaign to evacuate undocumented foreign nationals, many of whom have turned the streets into money-making hubs through begging.
Mr. Ako Gunn attributed the situation to failed leadership in the country’s social service sector, which has allowed this growing problem to persist.
“Then you will hear these people justify it by saying they are raising funds for the sick. But it’s because our social services are nothing to write home about…” the NDC communicator told Ohemaa Sakyiwaa on the Angel Morning Show on Monday, May 19, 2025.
