The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat is award 5,000 scholarships to qualified local tertiary students in a bid to support their education journey, as part of the 2025 Local Tertiary Scholarships Programme’s official launch.
Registrar of the Secretariat, Mr. Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, explained that the scholarship programme is designed to fulfil President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to increasing access to higher education and supporting the nation’s future leaders.
The 5,000 scholarship awards, he noted, will be distributed in two categories: 2,000 for brilliant but needy students and 3,000 for other qualified applicants who meet the competitive criteria.
He made this statement on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the press launch of the 2025 local scholarship programme.
He mentioned that in pursuit of fairness and nation-building, the scholarship application process has been revamped to be efficient, inclusive, and entirely digital.
“As part of our continuous effort to promote transparency, equity, and national development through education, this year’s application process has been designed to be efficient, inclusive, and entirely digital; this year’s scholarship will be awarded to 5,000 qualified applicants.
“2,000 will be awarded to brilliant but needy students across the various tertiary institutions, which would be administered by the various facilities, departments, and units in various tertiary institutions, with a technical committee from SCHOLSEC to play an oversight role,” he added.
He continued, “3,000 will be administered to other qualified applicants who would be selected based on competitive application processes.”
Highlighting further the programme’s strcuture and its eligibility criteria, Mr. Asafo–Agyei mentioned that applicants must be Ghanaian citizens, living in Ghana and already enrolled in tertiary programme.
Public university students in Level 200 [only] and above are eligible, whereas Private university students can apply from Level 100, given that the “No Fee Stress” policy does not apply to them.
He urged interested and qualified applicants to access the application portal on the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat website to begin the entry process.
“All interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to visit the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat website, www.scholarships.gov.gh to begin the application process,” he emphasized.
He confirmed the application process is entirely free and thus warned prospective applicants and the general public to be cautious of fraudulent activities.
“No individual, group, or third-party entity has been engaged or authorized to assist applicants at a fee.”
The Registrar stressed and appealed to Ghanaians to collaborate and help eliminate fruad and safeguard the integrity of the Schorlarship Scheme.
“We strongly caution all applicants against engagig with anuthorised persons or paying money to anyone under the guise of gaining favour or assistance in the seclection process. Let us work together to eliminate fraud and safeguard the integrity of the Scholarship Scheme.”
The application portal officially opens today, Wednesday, July 30, 2025, and closes on Friday, August 15, 2025, with interviews sheduled from Monday, August 18 to Saturday, August 30.
Results from the interviews are expected to be released in the first week in September.
