The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of selected public roads in Accra to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management during the State Funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash.
The solemn event is scheduled to take place at Independence Square on Friday, August 15, 2025.
In a statement ahead of the event, the police said the closures and diversions are necessary “to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management” during the ceremony.
The affected roads include 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction, the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on the Lokko Street, the Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road will be closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.
The police explained that these closures are to facilitate the free flow of the funeral procession and other related activities.
Motorists are being advised to take note of the diversions.
The police indicated that “traffic from La, Labone and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Accra Central Business District and the Ministries will be diverted onto the Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link-up with the Oxford Street.”
Also, “traffic from the John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square shall be diverted onto the Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.”
According to the statement, for vehicle access to the Black Star Square arena, only cars with approved windscreen-affixed entry stickers marked “RED with VVIP inscription” will be permitted.
The police stressed that “vehicles with approved windscreen affixed entry stickers… only will be allowed to enter the Black Star Square arena and park.”
In terms of parking, the police have earmarked several locations, including the forecourt of the State House, the International Conference Centre, the Osu Cemetery car park, the Accra Sports Stadium car park, the Ministries Areas, and the Marine Drive Football Park.”
The statement also cautioned that “no vehicle would be allowed to park at unauthorized places or drive through these road blockages.”
It further noted that “traffic police officers would be at hand to direct and assist motorists to the appropriate car parks and diverted roads” and that “towing/recovery trucks would be available to tow off any abandoned/disabled/wrongly parked vehicles in and around event grounds.”
In furtherance, security checks will be conducted for vehicles carrying dignitaries before entry is allowed.
The police concluded by urging motorists and the general public to take note of the arrangements and plan alternative routes.
“The general public especially motorists are once again urged to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies to ensure effective traffic management and control,” the statement read.
