The University of Ghana has issued a strong warning to individuals and groups unlawfully encroaching on its legally acquired lands situated at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region.
In a public notice dated August 20, 2025, the University stated that it is “the lawful and rightful owner of the said lands and remains in possession of valid title and documentation covering the entirety of its lands at Borteyman.”
According to the notice, “any unauthorised entry, occupation, sale, construction, development, allocation, or other activity whatsoever on the said lands constitutes criminal trespass and encroachment, in contravention of the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036); the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806); and the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), particularly Sections 152–157 on trespass.”
The University emphasised that the Land Act, 2020, “particularly Section 236, makes it a serious criminal offence for any person to unlawfully occupy, encroach upon, or interfere with public lands. Offenders are liable, upon conviction, to heavy fines and imprisonment.”
It further warned that, “the University of Ghana, as a public institution and the lawful owner of its legally acquired lands situated at Borteyman, will strictly invoke this provision and other laws to ensure the immediate removal, prosecution and punishment of all trespassers.”
The statement also cautioned individuals involved in such illegal activities to desist immediately.
“The University of Ghana shall not hesitate to pursue all necessary legal and other measures, including but not limited to civil actions for recovery of possession and damages; criminal prosecution of trespassers or the demolition and removal of unauthorised structures at the cost of encroachers.”
Management of the University advised the public to avoid dealings regarding purported allocations or developments on the said lands, stressing that “any person who disregards this notice does so at their own risk and shall face severe legal consequences.”
