The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced Yaw Asare, a 48-year-old head porter, to two years’ imprisonment for unlawfully damaging road infrastructure on the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange.
The conviction was made under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29), which addresses the offence of “causing unlawful damage.”
According to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Asare was arrested on June 9, 2025, for damaging parapet beams and accessories on the newly constructed interchange. The incident raised concerns about the growing trend of vandalism and destruction of public infrastructure.
In a statement released today, the Ministry expressed alarm over the increasing rate of unlawful damage to road assets, including traffic lights and other critical components. It emphasized that such actions are criminal offences and warned that perpetrators will face legal consequences.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that individuals who damage public road infrastructure are prosecuted and held accountable.
