President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by the government to construct standard stadiums across the country, taking inspiration from the recently built Tarkwa GoldFields facility.
The President noted that in regions without modern stadia, his administration will ensure that one is built.
Mr. Mahama’s announcement follows his acknowledgment of the leadership of Tarkwa GoldFields in constructing the 10,400-seater edifice. The facility, funded by the mining firm and built by the GoldFields Ghana Foundation, was officially commissioned on August 16, 2024.
Speaking during his media engagement on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Presidency, the President said the planned initiative takes inspiration from the Tarkwa GoldFields project situated in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
He noted that government projects in the past have cost significantly higher amounts but stressed the need for efficient management of resources in future sports infrastructure development.
“Tarkwa GoldFields built a standard stadium for their football activities, and I was surprised to learn it cost about $13 million. When the Government of Ghana has built a stadium, it cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
“Those of you who have been to Tarkwa and have seen the stadium, it’s a standard stadium, and it takes about 5,000 or 10,000 people. So, if GoldFields built it for $13 million, then government too should be able to do the same,” he observed.
According to him, he has directed that the same team which constructed the Tarkwa facility be contacted to replicate similar stadia in other regions that currently lack such infrastructure.
“So I asked them to find out the architect, the designers and everybody who built that stadium so that we can replicate it in our other regions that don’t have stadia,” the president stated.
