Award-winning Ghanaian rapper, Sarkodie, has opened up about his decision to continue rapping in Twi, despite achieving international recognition.
Speaking during a recent discussion, the celebrated artiste said his choice was intentional from the early stages of his career. According to him, he realised that music transcends language barriers.
“Music is a language, I figured that out way earlier in my career,” he said.
Sarkodie explained that he was not willing to switch to English simply to appeal to a wider audience.
“I wasn’t willing to rap in English because I felt that wasn’t going to make any difference. I wanted to hear my native tongue on all big radio stations outside Ghana, and I did that,” he stated.
The rapper emphasised that the technical aspect of music lies in its quality rather than the language used.
“I figured that the technical bit of music is that music is music, it just has to be very good,” he pointed out.
To buttress his point, Sarkodie revealed that he listens to several foreign artistes whose lyrics he does not understand.
“Some of my favourite artistes I never understood what they are saying. For example, Asundo, that’s someone I listen to but I don’t have no idea what he’s talking about,” he added.
