Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has urged the newly elected executives of the Ghana Boxing Federation to prioritise athlete welfare and expand talent scouting beyond Greater Accra to strengthen the future of boxing in the country.
He made the call during a recent engagement with the Federation’s new leadership on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
According to the Minister, the meeting was a positive one, centred on a shared understanding that boxing remains one of Ghana’s most historic sports but requires discipline, strong leadership and proper structure to thrive.
“I met with the newly elected executives of the Ghana Boxing Federation. It was a positive engagement, grounded in a shared understanding boxing is one of Ghana’s most historic sports, but its future depends on discipline, strong leadership and proper structure.
“I encouraged the team to prioritise athlete welfare, extend talent scouting beyond Accra, and build partnerships with institutions like the security services to open more opportunities for our young boxers.”
He noted that with “the National Sports Development Fund now in place, there’s a real chance to support sports like boxing sustainably. But credibility matters. We must tell a better story, stay focused, and work together to win both inside and outside the ring.
“As Minister, I reaffirm my full commitment to working with the Federation to rebrand and reposition amateur boxing. Together, we can restore the pride and competitive excellence Ghana boxing is known for.”
Mr. Adams emphasised that the establishment of the National Sports Development Fund presents a significant opportunity to ensure sustainable financing for lesser-funded disciplines such as amateur boxing.
However, he stressed that transparency, unity and credibility would be key to attracting the needed support and rebuilding public confidence.
He reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the Federation to rebrand and reposition amateur boxing, expressing optimism that Ghana can reclaim its pride and competitive excellence in the sport.
